Auto-Vox Back Up Camera

The nice folks at Auto-Vox have provided me their Wireless Solar Back Up Camera ($116.98) to review.

This is a perfect product for me to shake down since I don’t have a backup camera on my small camper.   I have tried other backup cams, however, this camera has a solid mounting mechanism which attaches behind your license plate.

Other manufacturers sometimes use magnetic mounts. I’m always afraid one big bump will either misalign the camera or have it fall off completely.  No worries here with a positively mounted bracket.   That being said the camera barely fits on my camper license plate mount because it is attached to a turn signal/brake light.

License Plate Mounting

One concern I have here is that my license plate on my camper is mounted outboard on the drivers side.   That will put the back up angle off somewhat.   Where the blue trash can is depicts the center of the camper.  While the camera can be rotated up and down, being off center is another issue entirely.

Alignment

So obviously, I need to be aware of this when backing up.  That being said I still get a great view of what is behind me which is certainly better than not having any visibility at all.

Auto-Vox Back Up Camera Features

This system fully supports the addition of a 2nd camera.  This would be particularly useful in using the cameras for security at a camp site.  Additionally, a 2nd cam can be placed anywhere around the site to give you the coverage you want.   Other features include:

  • Solar charging
  • Wireless
  • 5″ 1080p display
  • Split Screen for 2 cameras
  • IP69 Water Proofing protection
  • Fast Installation

Included Items

Box Contents

  • Camera
  • Display
  • Charging cable for camera
  • Power Cable for display
  • Mounting bracket
  • Double sided tape for mounting bracket
  • Manuals
  • Inclusive menus on display

Should You Buy One

Anyone who tows anything behind their vehicle can realize huge improvements in safety by having a clear view of the road behind them.  This camera works best on a center mounted license plate.  In the case of mounting situations like mine consideration must be given to the off center display lines.

This is clearly a more economical solution than having the car dealer install an OEM back up camera.

Also, the camera can be easily moved between vehicles or trailers.  It’s not a bad idea to have one of these around for trailers or for the rental U-Haul.

Mine is staying on the camper permanently.

Recommendations

My only recommendation would be to provide some kind of alternate mounting solution for off center installations such as mine.   Finally, I don’t have any ideas other than a magnetic mount which I discussed earlier.

But, yes, I think anyone with a boat, camper, trailer can benefit from owning one of these back up cameras.

Thanks this was a helpful review. I was trying to research as to whether the camera could be adjusted so that it can be in the centre of the license plate.

It seems that even if the license plate is in the centre of the car that the camera cannot be adjusted left or right to offset the battery/electronics.
